Caring For Community: Action Amidst Tragedy

In the wake of January’s devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, Jordan Kramer was inspired to action. She hadn’t expected her community to stand beside her.

Shock. Sadness. Helplessness. These emotions, and many others, chilled Jordan Kramer (she/her) as she followed the devastating wildfires spreading throughout Los Angeles in January 2025.

“I grew up in Los Angeles,” said Jordan. “Sadly, wildfires have become part of West Coast life—but I knew something was different with these. These fires spread quickly, seemingly doubling or tripling in size every time I checked.”

Jordan, her family, and their home were safe, but many of their loved ones weren’t so lucky. As the tragedy intensified, Jordan felt the need to do something.

She explained, “Several of my family members lost their homes. I know many people who lost everything from these fires. I realized I needed to do something to help.”

Acting on Passion

Jordan began her career in not-for-profit development, a passion she developed in childhood—her father, a founding member of a local chamber of commerce, frequently brought Jordan with him for in-person volunteer opportunities. Before joining Moss Adams as an executive assistant, she worked with organizations focused on education and literacy.

That background, and her role as a mother to two children, greatly contributed to the heartbreak she experienced as media footage showed schools and libraries burned beyond repair.

“I just cried,” Jordan said. “I thought of kids who lost their homes and the places they go to learn all at once. Books, backpacks, stuffed animals—all the little things that make their day brighter, taken away instantly.”

Jordan’s passion for community impact drove her despair toward determination. She decided to buy school supplies that could be donated to children impacted by the wildfires.

Harnessing Connections

Jordan and her sons, Rhodes and Chase, weren’t sure how they’d deliver the school supplies they purchased, but that didn’t stop them from recruiting friends and family to their cause via social media.

Then, a friend unexpectedly connected Jordan with a social media influencer fundraising to help with disaster relief. Within an hour, the influencer sent hundreds of dollars to support Jordan’s efforts.

“I started tearing up,” Jordan said. “My kids asked if I was crying because of the fires. I told them I was crying because people are so good. A stranger trusted me with their money to buy school supplies for kids in our community.”

Jordan continued, “My children saw firsthand the impact people can make in tough times. That was an important moment for me.”

The Power of Community

Jordan used the funds provided by the influencer, and some of her own, to purchase school supplies for children who lost so much to the wildfires. Additionally, Jordan donated to an employee giving campaign hosted by the Moss Adams Foundation to enhance her contribution to wildfire relief efforts.

With a car full of supplies, which included backpacks, binders, and pencils, Jordan and her sons drove to the El Segundo fire station. The station had been collecting donations of all kinds, but they’d reached capacity after the community provided so much for others in need. They were no longer able to accept physical donations.

Rather than feeling sad or defeated, Jordan felt validated. Her community was stepping up as she had, motivated to help their neighbors.

“Our community came together in such a massive way,” Jordan reflected. “It was nice to know we weren’t alone.”

Rallying For Relief

Jordan and her sons eventually made their way to El Segundo’s school district, where their donations could directly support several Los Angeles schools impacted by the fires.

“Our local district adopted a school in Altadena affected by the Eaton Fire and supported several other schools in the area,” Jordan shared. “Those supplies reached students impacted by one of the most destructive fires from the outbreak.” The Eaton Fire and the Palisades Fire were the last to be contained, finally ending on January 31—more than three weeks after they began.

Though the mayhem ended, rebuilding will take time. Fortunately, Jordan joins many individuals and organizations nationwide who have contributed to relief in Los Angeles. Jordan’s financial contribution to the employee giving campaign for wildfire relief culminated in Moss Adams team members raising more than $92,000 accompanied by matching from the Moss Adams Foundation.

The foundation also separately granted $75,000 to relief efforts led by the American Red Cross Disaster Response and several Los Angeles-based organizations, elevating the total impact to more than $167,000.

Rebuilding will take time, but the charitable resources and support from across the country will be influential to enhance ongoing relief efforts.

Collective action by her fellow teammates and the foundation, paired with swift support from her local community, reinforced Jordan’s pride in the unity that emerges when folks rally to help those in need. “It makes me happy to see how the foundation and our community responded to the wildfires. I feel content working at a firm that supports community building.”
