Dr. David Bollard has served multiple positions in the community and state throughout his career, including as the president of the medical group, chairman, and vice chairman of the department of family practice at Newton Medical Center, team physician for the New Jersey Cardinals minor league baseball team, and director of Sussex County Health Department.
While serving on the county and state medical societies, he was elevated to president of the osteopathic state medical society for two terms—only the second physician to serve two terms in the organizations’ 100-plus year history. Additionally, he has served as president of the SOM Alumni Association. He received honors from the New Jersey legislature for his contributions to medical education and was named the New Jersey Osteopathic Physician of the Year for 2021.
During his time in clinical medicine, Dr. Bollard has seen the transformation from private practice to group and now integrated practice. A strong proponent of physician ownership, he was tasked with finding a strategic partner for his medical group—Premier Health Associates—in 2022. Enlisting the assistance of Andy Corbet at Ziegler, the medical group went to the marketplace in the Spring of 2023. Because of the group’s strong platform, high quality providers, and regional dominance, there was extraordinarily strong interest in the group, with over 100 NDAs signed.
The next four months were spent walking through opportunities and determining which could make most sense for the community PHA served, the current employees and owners, as well as the creation of future ownership potential. Working through the process, Dr. Bollard was able to establish a joint venture with Atlantic Health System that allows the group’s owners the ability to tap into a large health system’s business acumen, tie into its large clinical integrated network, capitalize on group ownership and, through rate lift and shared ownership, participate in the profitability of the group created.
Through this process, Dr. Bollard learned a lot about what’s important in establishing a group that has financial stability and management expertise, coupled with a group that prioritizes physician ownership. His model will appeal to physicians who want the benefits of a large health system with a potential for backstream revenue and equity.
